Occupational Therapist (OT) Driving Assessments
Bridget is an RMS registered driving assessor with postgraduate driving qualifications. A driving assessment is conducted to determine a person’s fitness to drive according to RMS standards. Driving assessments can assist to facilitate freedom and independence.
-
• You have a medical condition that may impact on your ability to drive safely, e.g. physical injury, head injury, illness, disability, stroke, psychiatric disorder etc.
• Your physical, cognitive and/or psychological skills may have changed since you first obtained your driving licence.
• To identify deficits in your driving skills and implement ways to address these for safe driving.
• To increase your safe driving ability
• To provide you with professional advice and access to driving aids, vehicle modifications and driving techniques.
• To develop and implement a driving rehabilitation program (if necessary through driving lessons)
• To assist you to undergo an NSW RMS Disability Test
-
1. Off road Assessment: The off-road assessment is conducted by an OT and assesses vision, physical function, cognition and road law knowledge in the context of driving. This assessment will take up to two hours.
2. On Road Assessment: The practical on road assessment takes approximately one hour and is conducted in a dual controlled vehicle with a rehabilitation trained driving instructor who provides verbal directions and monitors safety. An OT’s role is to assess driving habits and deficits associated with the driver’s medical condition and the impact both have on driving. After the assessment, the results are provided to the driver, their family, GP and other required people and to the RMS. A remediation program may be recommended with a driving instructor if appropriate and recommended by the OT.
-
If the Occupational Therapist finds that your driving assessment is satisfactory then you may return to driving unconditionally, with some licence restrictions or potentially with modifications prescribed. If the Occupational Therapist finds that your driving assessment is not satisfactory then it may be recommended that you participate in driving lessons with a rehabilitation trained driving instructor to improve your driving skills and/or familiarise yourself with new modifications made to the vehicle. The Occupational Therapist may have to recommend that you are no longer safe to drive and will therefore report this to the RMS and your GP.
